Chocolate Babka
Soft and fluffy brioche dough and delicious dark chocolate come together in this Chocolate Babka. We hope you make #BakingWithGhee part of your weekend and indulge in this delicious treat.
For the brioche dough:
- ½ tsp of fine sea salt
- ¼ cup of brown sugar
- 1 tsp of vanilla extract
- 2 tsp of active dried yeast
- ¾ cup of warmed plant-based milk
- 2 ¾ cup of all-purpose flour
- ½ cup of 4th & Heart Original Recipe Ghee
For the chocolate filling:
- 2 Tbsp of cocoa powder
- ⅔ cup of powdered sugar
- ¼ cup of 4th & Heart Original Recipe Ghee
- ⅓ cup of dark chocolate chips, melted
For the vegan egg-wash:
- 1 Tbsp of maple syrup
- 2 Tbsp of plant-based milk
How to make the brioche dough:
- Whisk together plant based milk, melted ghee, brown sugar, and vanilla
- Stir in flour, salt, and dried yeast
- Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes.
- Place the ball-shaped dough into a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a kitchen towel and let rise for 2-3 hours until it has doubled in size
When ready to bake, make the chocolate filling:
- Melt ghee + chocolate chips together using the double boiler method
- Fold in cocoa powder and sugar until combined
How to shape and bake the babka
- Preheat your oven to 350ºF
- Roll the dough into a 0.4 inches thick rectangle
- Spread chocolate filling evenly across the dough
- Tightly roll up the dough and seal the ends together
- Flip the dough over so the sealed side is facing down and slice it down the center
- Criss-cross the two halves of dough on top of each other with the filling facing up, twist together and place into greased pan.
- Make the vegan egg-wash by combining both ingredients and stirring until combined.
- Brush babka with ½ of the egg wash and bake for about 40 to 45 minutes. Once it is done, coat with remaining egg wash
